Compress audio
Make an audio file smaller.
How to compress audio
Long recordings of lectures, meetings or podcasts can be too heavy to share. This tool lowers the bitrate of your audio so the file takes less space. An MP3 stays an MP3 and an M4A stays an M4A. A WAV or FLAC file has no bitrate to lower, so it comes back as an MP3, which is the only way a lossless file gets smaller.
- Upload the audio file you want to shrink.
- Choose Smaller file, Balanced or Best quality.
- Press Compress audio and download the smaller file.
This tool runs on our servers. Your file travels over an encrypted connection and is deleted automatically 2 hours after processing.
Questions people ask
How much smaller will my MP3 get?
It depends on the bitrate it already has. We always pick a bitrate lower than the source, so a 128 kbps MP3 comes back at 96 kbps on Balanced. If it cannot get any smaller, we keep your original and say so.
Why did my WAV file turn into an MP3?
WAV and FLAC store sound without lossy compression, so the only way to make them smaller is to change the format. The result page tells you when this happens.
Will the voice still be clear for a lecture or voice note?
Speech holds up well at lower bitrates, so Smaller file is usually fine for talks and voice notes. Choose Best quality for music.
What happens to the album art?
Embedded cover art is removed. It is often a large image, and keeping it would work against making the file smaller.
Is my audio stored anywhere?
The file is uploaded to our servers for processing and deleted 2 hours after processing.
