Compress image
Make photos smaller.
How to compress image
Exam portals, job applications and email all have upload limits, and phone photos are usually far over them. Pick a preset or drag the slider, check the estimated size, and download a lighter copy. Compression happens on your own device, so the photo never leaves your browser.
- Drop in one JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP image.
- Choose Smaller file, Balanced or Best quality, or drag the Fine-tune slider while watching the estimated size.
- Click Compress photo and download the smaller file.
Runs in your browser. Your file is processed on your own device and is never uploaded to our servers.
Questions people ask
Can I compress an image to exactly 20 KB or 50 KB?
There is no exact KB box. Move the slider until the estimate is under your form's limit; if a large photo still will not go low enough, resize it to smaller dimensions first and then compress it.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read, compressed and saved inside your browser, so nothing is sent to us.
Why did my file come back the same size?
Some images are already compressed as far as the chosen setting goes. Instead of handing you a bigger file, the tool returns the original untouched and tells you so. Try a lower setting.
My PNG barely got smaller. Why?
PNG is lossless, so the quality slider has little to work with. For photos and screenshots, converting to JPG or WebP with the image converter usually saves far more.
Does it change the format of my image?
No. A JPG stays JPG, a PNG stays PNG and a WebP stays WebP. BMP files are saved as PNG, because browsers cannot write BMP.
